Amara Journal Entry featuring personalised “This Home” canvas wall art in a warm, modern living room.

My friend moved into her new home last month, and I remember thinking, Finally.

She had talked about this house for so long that, in a strange way, I felt like I'd been waiting for the move too.

There had been years of saving, planning and waiting. So when the housewarming invitation finally came, I knew I wanted to take something with me.

I just didn't know what.

I started with the usual housewarming gifts.

A candle. A bottle of wine. Something for the kitchen. Maybe a pretty little piece of décor.

Nothing was wrong with any of those things. In fact, I've given some of them myself.

But this time, I wanted something different.

I kept thinking about her new home and wondering what I could give her that would actually feel like it belonged there.

And, more importantly, belonged to her.

So I went back to Made by Yuli

Made by Yuli is one of those places I already have in the back of my mind when I'm looking for gifts.

I've bought things from there before, so I wasn't starting from scratch. I already knew I'd probably find something thoughtful.

The only problem was that I didn't yet know what I was looking for.

I went through the usual things in my head.

A candle?

No.

A decorative piece?

Maybe.

Something for the kitchen?

Not quite.

I wanted something that would feel connected to this particular moment in her life.

So I started looking through the personalised pieces.

And that's when I found the wood décor.

It Was the Words

What caught my attention wasn't simply that it was beautiful.

It was the fact that the words could be personalised.

That changed everything for me.

Some of the pieces could even be done in a local Nigerian language alongside English.

That immediately made me think of my friend.

She's proudly Yoruba, and if you've ever spent time around her family, you'll know how naturally English and Yoruba move in and out of their conversations.

I started imagining a piece with words that would feel familiar to her.

Not just “Bless This Home.”

I wanted something that spoke about this particular moment in her life—the new home, the new beginning, the life she was building there.

Something that felt like a quiet blessing from one friend to another.

And then I realised I was taking the wording very seriously.

I kept changing it in my head.

I'd settle on one version and then think, No, that's not quite how I would say it.

I wanted the words to sound like something I would genuinely say to her, rather than something taken from a greeting card.

Eventually, I found the right words.

And I knew.

The Housewarming

When I arrived, the house still had that unmistakable new-home feeling.

There were boxes waiting to be unpacked and things that hadn't quite found their places yet.

I gave her the gift almost as soon as I arrived.

She opened it and read the message.

Then she read it again.

She didn't say much at first.

I remember watching her face, wondering whether she liked it as much as I hoped she would.

Then, a little later, she asked me where I'd found it.

And she asked if they could make one for her sister too.

That was the moment I knew I'd got it right.

Not because it was the biggest gift.

Not because it was the most expensive.

Simply because it felt like hers.

What Stayed With Me

I've been thinking about that gift ever since.

I think we sometimes choose gifts because they're convenient. Life is busy. There are children to get ready, work to do, errands to run and a hundred other things competing for our attention.

Sometimes you just need to buy something nice and get on with your day.

But every now and then, there's someone you want to slow down for.

Someone you want to think about properly before you choose.

That's what happened with this gift.

I already knew where I wanted to shop.

I just had to find the thing that felt right.

And I think that's an important difference.

Sometimes it's not about discovering somewhere new. Sometimes it's about knowing where you've had good experiences before and going back when you need something special.

I didn't want to give my friend another housewarming present.

I wanted to give her something she could put on a shelf and still notice months from now.

Something that would remind her of this particular season—the home she'd worked so hard to create, the beginning of something new, and the people who were happy enough for her to celebrate it with her.

Maybe that's what thoughtful gifting really is.

It's not always about finding the perfect thing.

Sometimes, it's simply about finding something that makes someone feel seen.

And for me, that made this little personalised piece feel like much more than décor.

It felt like a message from one home to another.
